Estates of alumni donate over $4M to Ohio Northern

7/11/2007

ADA, Ohio - Two alumni of Ohio Northern University have given more than $4 million to the school through their estates, the university announced yesterday.

The estate of Anthony and Doris Martin has provided more than $2.5 million for the existing premedical student scholarship fund in their name.

An additional $1.5 million was given to the university from the estate of Dwight L. Carhart to establish a Fred L. Carhart memorial program in legal ethics in the Pettit College of Law.

Dr. Martin, a 1931 alumnus who ran a medical practice in Atlanta, died in March, 1997. Mrs. Martin died in 2005.

The Martins' scholarship program began in 1986.

Their goal was to "assist Ohio Northern University in making the finest pre-medical education possible available to capable and deserving students," according to an ONU statement.

Mr. Carhart, a 1947 graduate of ONU, wanted to create a program to increase ethical training for lawyers. The program will fund annual lectures by nationally known legal ethics authorities.

Mr. Carhart, who served as legal counsel for General Electric and lived in Hendersonville, N.C., died in December, 2005.

The program is named for Mr. Carhart's father, Fred Carhart, a 1902 alumnus of ONU who also was a lawyer, practicing in Marion, Ohio. He died in 1948.

Last month, Eugene A. Beeler, a 1949 graduate of ONU who died in October, left $3 million to his alma mater.

Mr. Beeler was a certified public accountant and founding partner in Howard & Beeler in Lima, Ohio, which is now Lentol Violet Kienitz & Co.

His gift is to be divided among an endowment fund that Mr. Beeler created in 1996 for student scholarships, ONU's endowment fund that benefits the general fund, and to the James F. Dicke College of Business Administration.
