Owens recognizes community partners

Cable and telephone companies and a university have been recognized this year with community partnership awards for their service to Owens Community College.

Buckeye CableSystem and Buckeye TeleSystem were selected by Owens' campus in Perrysburg Township. Both companies and The Blade are owned by Block Communications Inc.

The companies have provided cable television distribution in all campus buildings and are establishing an advanced fiber-optic network.

They also assisted with the grand-opening celebration of the Center for Emergency Preparedness with live cable TV and Internet coverage.

Owens' Findlay campus has chosen to recognize the University of Findlay for its long-standing partnerships with Owens.

The institutions have more than a dozen articulation agreements for the transfer of students between them and also share teaching resources with faculty holding classes in each other's academic classrooms.

Owens is holding a community appreciation event today beginning at 8 a.m. today in recognition of the recipients at the college's new learning center at The Source, 1301 Monroe St.

In addition, the event will serve as the formal dedication of the learning center at the work-force development agency in downtown Toledo.
