Toledo Public Schools announce volunteer honors

Eight individuals and one group were presented with Silver Slate Awards last night for outstanding volunteer service to the Toledo Public Schools.

The Toledo Board of Education recognized the volunteers during the board's regular meeting last night.

The annual recognition program began in 1983.

The 2007 honorees are:

•Vincent Hornik, who spearheaded the effort to re-establish an active parent-teacher organization at DeVeaux Junior High School.

•"Grandfriends at Kahle Senior Center," who worked with fourth-grade students at Whittier Elementary as pen pals, chaperones, and friends.

•Darlene Meach, for her support of students and staff at Whittier by assisting in the office, working as a lunchroom monitor, and raising funds.

•Danny Hargraves, manager of the Wendy's restaurant at East Manhattan Boulevard and Stickney Avenue, who provided 9,000 hamburger coupons to be used as incentives for academics, attendance, and good citizenship for TPS students.

•Lisa Tirone, for her support of students and staff at Harvard Elementary by assisting in the lunchroom and library, and raising funds.

•Phyllis Nilsson, who knitted 42 sets of mittens, hats, and scarves for students at Nathan Hale Elementary.

•William Brennan, president of Associated General Contractors of Northwest Ohio, for his support of the Rogers High School Construction Academy, which gives students four years of experience in construction careers.

•Gary Reddish, owner of Reddish Contact Sports Supply, who has supported his alma mater, Waite High School, with sports supplies and other donations.

•Nancy Lutz, for her 12 years of support of Beverly Elementary School. Ms. Lutz has worked as a library volunteer, event coordinator, and field day volunteer.
