School tax issues, board members on Michigan ballot

5/6/2008

Elections in Michigan today will choose board members and decide tax issues in school districts in Monroe and Lenawee counties.

Many districts are asking voters to renew an 18-mill, non-homestead property tax, which covers commercial and rental properties but not primary residences.

A mill is $1 for every $1,000 in property valuation.

Several districts also are asking voters to renew sinking-fund taxes, which are used for facilities maintenance.

Voters in the Tecumseh Public School District are being presented with two bond issues for a total of 7.2 mills.

That tax would generate $36.7 million over 22 years. Because the district already is collecting 7.2 mills for a previous bond issue, passage would not raise local tax rates.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters are asked to present photo identification.
