Rally raises $6,897 to aid literacy effort

5/18/2008

A team sponsored by a local lawyer took top honors yesterday in the second annual Amazing Race for Literacy, a combination scavenger hunt-road rally-benefit, which raised $6,897 for Read for Literacy.

In all, nearly 100 competitors in 18 vehicles engaged in the Amazing Race.

The winning team, sponsored by Gary McBride of Spengler Nathanson, wasn't necessarily the fastest or the most skilled at the wheel. But it was first to solve riddles and decipher clues to find 12 sites in Toledo, Maumee, Perrysburg, and Rossford. The companies that sponsored sites contributed $250 to Read for Literacy. Participants or teams paid $150.

The final clue took participants to Owens Community College in Perrysburg Township.

The top team, Tammie Dunn, Kris Shook, Sharon Gray, Barb Walters, and Bev Moward, received a trophy created by potter Mary Weiss.

The starting line of the Amazing Race was at the Maumee branch of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. Wrapping up as the race got under way was Claire's Day, the annual family book festival held at the Maumee branch in memory of Claire Lynsey Rubini, who was 10 when she died eight years ago.

The Amazing Race benefits Read for Literacy, the nonprofit adult literacy program that helps people in the Toledo area who want to learn to read or strengthen their reading skills.
