Toledo Public Schools panel will discuss Scott options tomorrow

7/1/2008

The Toledo Board of Education's school facilities committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the district's plans for Scott High School.

The meeting will be at 1 p.m. in the board room of the Thurgood Marshall Building, 420 East Manhattan Blvd.

Committee members Darlene Fisher and Lisa Sobecki will talk with Ohio School Facilities Commission officials for a clear understanding of the options for Scott's 96-year-old building on Collingwood Boulevard.

The most recent option is taking the high school out of the district's building plan, which would allow more flexibility for renovation but also would mean no state money for the project.

A full renovation, which is required by OSFC, is expected to cost about $39 million, while the state will only fund $25 million based on its funding formula. The district says it does not have the $14 million difference.

Community members have said publicly at forums and school board meetings that they want to renovate the building rather than demolishing it and building a new structure.

The question before the committee during its meeting tomorrow will be how to go about that.
