Toledo Public Schools offers needy families free school uniforms

7/15/2008

The Toledo Public Schools uniform office opened yesterday to help low-income families with free school uniforms.

The office at 443 East Manhattan Blvd. behind the new Leverette Middle School, is open from

8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Parents and guardians of schoolchildren are asked to bring photo identification and proof of guardianship, household income during the last 30 days, and proof of enrollment in assistance programs such as food stamps or Medicaid.

Families will be sent a letter within 30 days letting them know if they meet the criterion of living at or below 200 percent of the poverty level. If approved, the student will receive two pairs of pants, two tops, and a belt.

Uniforms are required for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, and high school students follow a dress code. The policies are in effect the first day of school, Aug. 28.

For families not eligible for free uniforms, they can be bought at area stores such as The Andersons, Dillard's, Target, and Wal-Mart. For more information, call the uniform office at 419-244-3636.
