CLYDE, Ohio The superintendent of the Clyde-Green Springs School District has been placed on paid leave pending the outcome of a criminal investigation into irregular purchases.

Todd Helms, who has been superintendent since 2001, was put on leave by the school board Monday night following an executive session.

Officials said the investigation centers around irregular purchases made through the school district, but no other information will be released until the investigation is completed.

Assistant Superintendent Gregory Elchert will be interim superintendent.

The investigation began after district Treasurer Alan Binger contacted Clyde Chief Bruce Gower Saturday night.

The next day, the chief met with school officials and their legal counsel. On Monday, police conducted a search of the district s offices and seized four computers and unidentified items.

The state auditor s special investigations unit will conduct a special audit.
