Oregon school board OKs 2-mill levy for November vote

The Oregon Board of Education voted last night to place a 2-mill permanent improvement levy on the Nov. 4 ballot.

The levy, which would generate $1.25 million in annual revenue, would be dedicated to rehabilitating, improving, equipping, and furnishing existing school buildings.

The board decided to take both steps of the levy process in a single session, approving both a declaration of necessity and a resolution to place the levy on the ballot. Board member Jeff Ziviski said condensing the process to a single meeting was part of the board's "initiative to reduce costs." Board members are paid $125 per meeting.

Combining the levy meetings would help offset the cost of special meetings the board held this summer to choose a new superintendent, Mr. Ziviski said. "If we can save money and it will help the district, we'll do it," he said.
