B.G. schools consider request for tax increase

BOWLING GREEN - Voters in the Bowling Green City School District may be asked in May to dig a little deeper to support their schools.

The Board of Education Tuesday night discussed seeking an additional $3 million in operating dollars.

The increased revenue would come from a property tax levy, an additional half-percentage-point income tax, or taxes levied on income from employment but not on pensions and other retirement income.

Superintendent Hugh Caumartin said the board voted unanimously to ask the Wood County auditor to determine how much millage would be required to generate the money and to ask the Ohio Department of Taxation to determine the amount of an income tax increase that would raise the same amount.

Treasurer Rhonda Melchi said voters in the district last approved new operating dollars in May, 2005, when they passed an additional 1.9 mills and the replacement of a 2.3-mill levy.
