B.G. schools to put hike in income tax on ballot

2/12/2009

BOWLING GREEN Voters in the Bowling Green school district will be asked in May to approve a 0.5 percent income tax increase to pay for operations.

Superintendent Hugh Cau martin said the district s in the black, but a $300,000 deficit is forecast by the end of fiscal year 2011 without more revenue.

The ballot language will ask voters to replace the current 0.5 percent income tax with a 1 percent tax. The new tax is projected to generate $6 million annually. It would run for five years before needing renewal.

If adopted, the school board would stop collecting the existing 0.5 percent tax in effect since 1993.
