DEFIANCE Defiance College has selected the dean of the University of Detroit Mercy school of law as its next president.

Mark C. Gordon will be the 18th president of the private liberal arts college, Philip Mallott, chairman of Defiance College s board of trustees, announced yesterday. He will assume the presidency this summer.

Mark is an innovative and dynamic individual who has had tremendous success leading the growth and development of the law school at Detroit Mercy, Mr. Mallott said. Throughout his career, he has clearly demonstrated his commitment to civic responsibility and service learning, qualities that are the foundation of our mission at Defiance College.

Mr. Gordon s appointment follows a five-month national search process.

Gerald Wood, president since 2002, stepped down June 30, citing transitions in his professional and personal life. Charles Warren, retired president of Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Va., is interim president.

Mr. Gordon has led the University of Detroit Mercy law school for more than six years. Enrollment has nearly doubled during his tenure.
