Sylvania school board OKs option on 40 acres

6/18/2009

The Sylvania school board has approved a purchase option for about 40 acres in Sylvania Township as the site to replace Central Elementary School.

An environmental survey of the properties at 9336 and 9364 Wolfinger Rd., soil sampling, and other logistical issues will be addressed during follow-up study, according to a district statement issued yesterday, one day after a special school board meeting during which the purchase option was approved.

The negotiated price for the land is $800,000. According to county land records, both parcels belong to Melvin S. Lesinski and currently have homes on them; the 9336 Wolfinger site is 37.4 acres and last valued at $351,400, while the 9364 Wolfinger property is 1 acre and last valued at $141,000.

An architectural firm and Sylvania Schools administration have been working with staff and parents on the new school's design. Final design meetings will conclude after the site purchase has been finalized.

Relocation of Central Elementary is included in projects being funded by a bond issue passed by voters last November.

Work continues on the other projects as part of the bond issue, including safety enhancements and renovations at other Sylvania schools.
