Veteran administrator named BGSU provost
7/17/2009BOWLING GREEN - Bowling Green State University has named a new administrator to serve as its second-in-command behind President Carol Cartwright.
Kenneth W. Borland, Jr., 52, will begin his duties as provost and vice president for academic affairs at BGSU on Aug. 15. He will be paid a salary of $240,000.
Mr. Borland holds the same title at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.
He will be responsible for all academic programs and will oversee BGSU's colleges, enrollment, and research.
Ms. Cartwright said it is a "critical leadership role" for the university.
"Ken will work closely with me to build on
BGSU's reputation and help us achieve even higher levels of academic excellence and student success," she said.
The school has not had a permanent provost since Shirley Baugher resigned in December for family reasons after 1 1/2 years on the job.
Mark Gromko, BGSU's vice provost for academic programs, served as interim provost before retiring June 30.
Rodney Rogers, dean of BGSU's college of business administration, is acting provost until Mr. Borland arrives on campus.
Mr. Borland has been East Stroudsburg University's provost since 2004. Before that, he was an associate provost at the university.
He served as interim president for a portion of 2008.
He also has worked as an assistant vice provost at Montana State University-Bozeman and served as an associate and assistant professor of higher education and adult learning at Dallas Baptist University.
Mr. Borland has a doctorate in adult and higher education from Pennsylvania State University, a master's degree in education and religion from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a bachelor's degree in theology from Toccoa Falls College.
"I'm looking forward to helping students succeed and supporting our faculty in their research," Mr. Borland said in a statement. "That combination is vital to our success. I'm delighted to have this opportunity to help lead BGSU into its second century."
