Owens Community College President Christa Adams announced Thursday she will retire next year.

Ms. Adams, who has led the college since 2001, will retire effective Dec. 31, 2010.

"I have loved every single day with every single one of my Owens friends," Ms. Adams wrote in a letter to the campus community. "I love our buildings and grounds, our training centers, and our learning centers."

In a letter filled with references to the importance of people in leadership, she thanked the Owens Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students "who have touched my life, and taught me how to lead."

Ms. Adams was chosen as the first female president of Owens in May, 2001.

She was previously president of St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron, Mich.

Ms. Adams succeeded Daniel Brown, who had led Owens for 17 years.
