CLEVELAND — The University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University were among 14 universities named Friday as having centers of excellence in biomedicine in health care.

The announcement was made by Gov. Ted Strickland and Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut at BioEnterprise, a Cleveland organization that aims to commercialize bioscience technologies.

At UT, the center is at the Biomarker Research and Individualized Medicine Center, which is focused on figuring out how best to create individual diagnoses and treatments, said Dr. Jeffrey Gold, provost and executive vice president of health affairs and dean of UT’s college of medicine. “It is a highly exciting area, not only because it potentially will dramatically improve the quality of health care, but because of the rapid route to economic development,” Dr. Gold said.

At BGSU, the center is Health and Wellness Across the Life span, which promotes basic and applied research dealing with disease prevention, health promotion, and economic benefits.
