BGSU to lay off 10 in economy move

BOWLING GREEN — Ten Bowling Green State University employees are being laid off in the latest budget cuts, the university announced yesterday.

The cuts are in residence life, dining services, and the University Bookstore. Affected employees have the right to “bump” others with less seniority in the same job classification, so other parts of the university could be impacted, President Carol Cartwright said in a letter to faculty and staff.

The layoffs are expected to save BGSU about $180,000 a year, Ms. Cartwright said.

The school last year made several cost-cutting announcements, including mandatory one-week furloughs for more than 500 employees, the elimination of about 70 full-time positions, layoffs of about 20 classified full-time employees, and a plan to save at least $5 million by offering employees a year's salary to retire or leave the university early.
