Oregon schools to cut 20 employees if Nov. 2 levy doesn't pass

Oregon City Schools will need to lay off another 20 employees next school year if a 5.9-mill emergency operating levy does not pass Nov. 2, officials said at a meeting Thursday night.

The school district would need to trim another $2 million from its budget if the five-year levy does not pass. Other cuts if the levy does not pass include eliminating Career and Technology programs and possibly closing an elementary school.

The levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 house about $180 a year.

The school district already has slashed more than $7 million over the last three years. Last school year, for example, Oregon laid off 32 teachers.
