Trustees with the University of Toledo Monday afternoon unanimously approved a new contract with workers at the health sciences campus in South Toledo.

The agreement with members of Local 2415, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees calls for raises over a two-year period.

A retroactive 2 percent raise will be given out beginning with the first pay period in November, while on July 11 employees will receive another 3 percent increase.

The pact also calls for a lump-sum payment to each union member, ranging from $250 to $1,000 based on pay scale.

In addition, employees will receive bonuses for patient satisfaction.

Employees will not be able to cash out on unused sick and personnel time, which leaders said is a $1.8 million estimated annual savings for the university.

The administration also would have the right to order employees to take up to 32 hours of furloughs.

Several trustees expressed reservations about the contract but no one abstained or voted no for the agreement.

Local 2415 represents about 1,800 hourly employees, from technical and clerical workers to nurses and respiratory care and occupational therapists. They work on the campus that was once the Medical College of Ohio.
