ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Documents released by the University of Michigan say the school has banned about 2,000 people from all or parts of its campus since 2001.

The Detroit Free Press reports Thursday that school President Mary Sue Coleman has ordered a review of the Ann Arbor school's policy.

Campus police say the policy is needed ensure safety.

But Michael Steinberg, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, says the group is concerned the policy has been abused.

The policy drew attention last year after Andrew Shirvell was banned from campus. The former assistant state attorney general was eventually fired after being accused of harassing the gay student assembly president at the school.

Shirvell later was allowed back on campus with restrictions.
