MONROE — The location of the Monroe Public Schools board of education meeting for 7 p.m. Tuesday has been moved from the administration building on North Macomb Street to the auditorium in the Middle School, 503 Washington St.

Among the items for action on the school board agenda are layoffs of 343 teachers and 21 administrators, which school officials expect to draw a large audience. Also, union groups and others plan to stage informational picketing today at schools to protest funding cuts that Gov. Rick Snyder has proposed for Michigan schools.

The unions, including the Monroe Education Association, which represents district teachers, plan to hand out information at the elementary schools, middle school, and high school at the end of the school day as well as before and after the school board meeting at the middle school.

The school district’s proposed layoffs of all its teachers and principals will be done to comply with union contracts that require 60-day notices while it works on the budget that must be approved by June 30.

The district anticipates bringing back most of the employees.
