TONTOGANY — The Otsego Board of Education Tuesday approved more than $600,000 in cuts for next school year that would leave the district with fewer teaching positions and two fewer principals.

The cuts were made in response to a loss of state funding — from $5.7 million annually three years ago to $5 million next year — and a drop in income tax revenue.

Eliminated will be a high school English position and an elementary teaching position. French as a foreign language will be phased out, and the business education program will be cut. Two special-education teachers and a junior high English teacher are leaving and will not be replaced. Administratively, the junior high principal is retiring and will not be replaced, and an elementary principal will be laid off.
