MONROE — A boil-water advisory has been issued for users of the Monroe water system because of high levels of coliform bacteria that were detected in the water supply.

The city and the Monroe County Health Department have issued a warning to boil water prior to using it.

People are asked to refrain from drinking water unless it has been boiled.

The warning was posted Wednesday afternoon and is expected to be lifted in the next 48 hours, the city said.

Monroe Public Schools and Monroe County Educational Center and Transition Center are closed Thursday because of the water issue.
