Administrators with Toledo Public Schools said at a meeting Tuesday night that the district should not put a levy request on the November ballot.

Delaying a TPS levy until 2012 “will allow the district to remain focused on providing quality educational programs for our students,” said Superintendent Jerome Pecko.

Members of the Toledo Board of Education are not expected to vote on the levy issue, and the administration’s recommendation to put off a levy request is expected to stand.

Faced with a shrinking student population and depleting state and federal aid, the Toledo school district has been in cut mode in recent years, shaving millions through layoffs, building closures, reduced services, and employee concessions.

Levies failed twice last year, including a 7.8-mill levy that was defeated in November by a substantial margin.
