Toledo Public Schools kicked off the 2011-2012 school year Monday, with thousands of students returning for the first day of school.

Elementary schools held half-days, while high school students attended for a full day. District officials said Monday afternoon that they were still compiling head-counts at some schools as students were still being enrolled, so there was no word on how many students showed up for the first day.

Despite major changes in the district that included boundary changes at many schools and the elimination of middle and elementary schools for K-8 buildings, district officials said the day went through relatively smoothly.

Students had little trouble finding their new home schools, assistant superintendent Romules Durant said.

“Everything has been going smooth and good,” he said.
