The final step in a two-part tuition increase at Owens Community College is to take effect in January, the result of trustees approving a 1.86 percent increase last week.

The increase of $2.53 a credit hour will bring the cost per credit hour to $138.89.

The tuition increase is expected to generate an additional $800,000 annually for the college's general operations, said John Satkowski, executive vice president and chief financial officer at Owens.

Trustees authorized the college this year to raise tuition by $200 annually for full-time students in two steps.

Tuition rose by $126 annually during the fall and summer semesters.

When the new tuition increase goes into effect next year, it will cost students an additional $74 annually, bringing the total added tuition to $200, Mr. Satkowski said.

The board eliminated a $40 annual student parking fee this year, so students can now park at no charge in a lot.

He said trustees felt this was a trade-off for the tuition increase.
