ANN ARBOR, Mich.— University of Michigan officials say they have ordered an outside review of campus security in the wake of a botched response to child pornography found on a medical resident's computer flash drive.

An internal investigation determined a hospital attorney aware of the discovery decided after a month there wasn't enough evidence to tell police and closed the matter in June.

The case was reopened by fall and charges filed against the resident. The flash drive was found in a staff lounge.

A university audit released Friday says outside experts will be hired by April 1 and an improvement plan developed within 60 days.

University President Mary Sue Coleman said in a statement the six-month delay in properly responding to the incident was a "serious failure" by the institution.
