6th-grade boys from St. Pius X retain lead at half-way point
3/20/2012Cathie Ujvagi's students held on to the top spot in The Blade's School Stock Contest during its sixth week and are determined to finish in one of the top three positions.
Stocker, a team of sixth-grade boys from St. Pius X in Toledo, switched its holdings in Nike Inc. for Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. The team hopes the move will keep its portfolio ahead for the remainder of the 12-week competition, Ms. Ujvagi said.
"They thought that Nike is more just shoes, where Dick's is more general athletic supplies and equipment," she said. "With spring coming now, more of a variety of sports would be purchased.
They figured it's baseball season and soccer season."
The team has been in first place for all but two weeks of the contest, when it was third. The rest of its holdings are in Fusion-io Inc., Apple Inc., and Under Armour Inc. Its portfolio increased from $48,456.44 in Week Five to $49,052.43 last week.
All teams had an opportunity to change their portfolios Friday, and the changes took effect Monday.
The contest began Feb. 3 and runs until April 27. Students from 153 teams in classrooms from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan are participating, and the team with the biggest portfolio increase wins.
Each team was given a hypothetical $40,000 to allocate evenly among four stocks worth at least $5 a share.
At the end of the contest, the winning team will receive $250 for the students and $250 for the school. Second place will receive $250 for the school, and third place gets $100 for the school.
The contest is sponsored by The Blade's Newspaper in Education program, Fifth Third Bank, and the University of Toledo, which calculates the results.
Mary McCoy's students at Arbor Hills Junior High in Sylvania were split on whether to trade their stocks or stick with what they'd originally chosen.
One team, raid5, ranks second but opted to trade holdings in Nike and Monster Beverage Corp. for stock in Google Inc. and Atlas Energy LP.
The team also has Apple and Abercrombie & Fitch Co. Its portfolio increased from $46,293.97 in Week Five to $47,701.71 in Week Six.
"I don't know how it's going to pan out for them," Ms. McCoy said of her seventh-grade math students. "They thought maybe they could make more money.
They were looking at the two lowest [stocks in their portfolio] … I said they were all pretty good, but they decided to change two of them."
Another of Ms. McCoy's teams, Gop1, is in fourth place and didn't change any of its stocks. The team felt its portfolio of Apple, Abercrombie, Google, and The Andersons Inc. would keep it among the top teams.
"They were afraid if they did, they might go to the negative, so they are going to stick with what they hope will win," Ms. McCoy said.
Matthew Faltys, vice president of Fifth Third Bank of Northwest Ohio, said the total number of stock swaps is still being tallied. He said they could shake up the rankings, but portfolios would change based on stock-specific news.
"You have to hope that no bad news comes out for any of the names in their portfolio," he said.
