Bowsher team zips from 98th to 6th place on 1 stock's surge
4/24/2012The Blade's School Stock Contest ends Friday, but a team from Toledo's Bowsher High School proved last week that one week is enough to make a big move.
The team, 0Cool, jumped from 98th place to sixth thanks to a company called Endocyte Inc.
Its stock price more than doubled last week after the company announced that Merck & Co. would pay it $120 million for rights to an experimental cancer treatment.
A rise like that is extremely unusual and is one of few witnessed during the contest's history, said Matthew Faltys, a vice president at Fifth Third Bank.
But 0Cool shouldn't expect Endocyte's stock to keep rising.
"The easy money in Endocyte has been made," he said. "They could have a run — they've got a shot. Anything can happen in this week. Something else could pop, and you could see that sixth team move up to the top."
BOOM, a team from Bowling Green High School, remained in first place, and Stocker, a team from St. Pius X in Toledo, moved up to second from third.
BOOM's holdings are Pentair Inc., Terra Nitrogen Co. LP, Ross Stores Inc., and Apple Inc. Its portfolio is valued at $49,083.45.
Stocker is looking to regain its first-place rank in the final week of the contest, said Cathie Ujvagi, who teaches the sixth-grade team.
Stocker's portfolio was worth $48,683.43 at the end of last week.
"They're thrilled — it's just the excitement of having been at the top," she said. "They want to stay there."
OCool's portfolio rose 16.6 percent to $46,488.63 from $39,873.12. It also has Frontline Ltd., Scholastic Corp., and Huntington Bancshares Inc.
0Cool picked Endocyte when the teams were given a chance to change stocks during a one-time swap on March 16.
"We discussed what would be good stocks to pick, and they came up with the idea of pharmaceutical stock," said Tim Best, who teaches the seniors in his Advanced Placement English class.
"They wanted to pick based on some drug that would be approved. I don't know if that's why they picked that stock, but that was the idea."
The 153 teams participating in the contest were given a hypothetical $40,000 to allocate evenly among four stocks worth at least $5 a share for the annual 12-week event.
The participants are from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, and the contest concludes Friday.
The team with the largest portfolio at the end of the contest wins. The Blade will announce the winner in print and online May 1.
The winning team will receive $250 for the students and $250 for the school. The second-place team will receive $250 for the school, and the third-place team will win $100 for the school.
The contest is sponsored by The Blade's Newspaper in Education program, Fifth Third Bank of Northwest Ohio, and the University of Toledo, which calculates the results.
