COLUMBUS - The Toledo School for the Arts was awarded the Arts Education award today during the 2012 Governor’s Awards for the Arts ceremony.

The charter school was among eight winners of the awards, which were presented by the Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council. The ceremony was held at noon at the Columbus Athenaeum in downtown Columbus.

Nearly 70 nominations were submitted for the awards. Winners will receive an original work of art by Debra Joyce Dawson, an artist from Pataskala, Ohio.

“Since its founding in 1999, the Toledo School for the Arts (TSA) has become a national model for arts education and a perfect example of the transformative impact the arts have on students,” a Governor’s Award’s biography for the school reads.

More than 30 school supporters traveled to the ceremony, including school director Martin Porter and Toledo City Council members Paula Hicks-Hudson and Steve Steel.
