BOWLING GREEN--The Bowling Green State University pop culture building was razed today.

The demolition was ahead of schedule, a BGSU spokesman said, and began around 7 a.m.

Early stages of demolition began earlier this week.

City and university records show that BGSU applied for a demolition permit for the 838 E. Wooster St. property on July 27 and signed a $17,000 purchase order with D&R Demolition for the project on Tuesday.

The building housed four of BGSU's 11 presidents before becoming the birthplace of the popular culture studies program, and advocates had pointed to the building's history as a reason to preserve it.

About 50 protesters attempting to save the home gathered last Tuesday. Organizers also obtained a quote for the cost of moving the house -- estimated at $18,000 -- and included the figure in a letter to President Mazey.

Throughout their campaigning, supporters of the home have claimed that the university has failed to notify faculty members of its timeline and plans for demolition, a charge spokesman David Kielmeyer denied.
