School district receives anti-pollution grant
11/20/2012The Benton Carroll Salem school district has been named the recipient of a $9,396 grant from the Ohio Evironmental Protection Agency that will be used to install diesel oxidation catalysts on six buses.
In all, eight districts will receive the grants intended to reduce children's exposure to pollutants in diesel exhaust. The total amount of grant money is $277,885.53. The equipment is expected to eliminate 262 pounds of fine particle pollution and more than three tons of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons each year the buses are in service.
Priority for grants is given to applicants in areas that do not meet federal air quality standards for fine particulates. These particulates can aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis.
