The Maritime Academy of Toledo has received a $12,100 state grant to pay for teaching its cadets about boating and kayak safety.

The Water Safety Fund grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is one of 29 such grants statewide, ranging in size from $2,329 to $29,999, that the state agency has released, an academy statement said.

“ODNR tells us that kayaking is the fastest-growing segment of nautical recreational activities in the state, especially among young women and Hispanics. It’s inexpensive and great family fun," said Renee Marazon, the academy’s superintendent.

Grant funds will pay for kayaks, a trailer to haul them, instructor training, and other program expenses, with the academy’s program expected to start early next year, Ms. Marazon said.
