UT appeals arbitrator’s finding

1/31/2013

Two weeks after an arbitrator found that the University of Toledo violated its contract with the faculty union by failing to consult the Faculty Senate about a plan to reorganize academic colleges, UT trustees have appealed the decision.

The board filed the action in Lucas County Common Pleas Court late Tuesday seeking to “vacate, modify, or correct” the arbitration award, which sided with the UT chapter of the American Association of University Professors.

The arbitrator ruled Jan. 11 that UT must “in the future” abide by a section of the union contract that requires the university to “meet and interact” with the Faculty Senate over planning and other organizational issues.

“The contract was meant to have the faculty input that we feel is important in making decisions about planning," said Harvey Wolff, faculty union president.

The decision comes too late to alter a reorganization plan implemented in 2010.
