TIFFIN — Calvert Catholic Schools received a gift of more than $470,000 from the estate of a former student.

Leo Sendelbach graduated in 1944 from Calvert High School, and upon his death in July at the age of 85 left the proceeds from the sale of his 68-acre farm located about five miles north of Tiffin to the Catholic school system. Superintendent Hank Elchert said the school officially accepted the gift of more than $470,000 on Jan. 27.

The school plans to create an endowment and use 85 percent of its earnings to fund $1,000 in tuition assistance to 12 students each year. One award will be given to one student in each grade from first through 12th grades, and students can win the aid only once during their academic career.

The remaining 15 percent generated through earnings will pay for building equipment each year, Mr. Elchert said.

Mr. Sendelbach was an excellent student who earned the high school’s top award given to those who excel academically, are involved in community activities, and exhibit other well-rounded characteristics, Mr. Elchert said.

“This is a major, major contribution,” said Mr. Elchert of the gift from the estate.

The school has about 467 students in kindergarten through 12th grades, plus offers programs for younger children.

Mr. Elchert hopes to award the first financial gifts to students next school year.
