A special flag ceremony will take place at the Springfield High School Field House, 1470 S. McCord Rd in Holland, Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Springfield graduate 1st Lieutenant David Whitehead of the U.S. Army National Guard will speak briefly and then present a flag from the school district that was flown in both Kabul and Kandahar, Afghanistan.

In 2012, both Lieutenant Whitehead and his brother, Capt. John Whitehead, were deployed to Afghanistan. Although in different units, the brothers acquired a flag from the school district and both flew the same flag — first in Kabul (by David) then in Kandahar (by John). Both Springfield graduates have returned safely.

Lieutenant Whitehead is assigned to the Ohio National Guard 237th Brigade Support Battlion while Captain Whitehead is assigned to the 296th Brigade Support Battalion, Joint Base Lewis in McCord, Wash.

All are welcome to attend.
