Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, refers to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season which begins on Ash Wednesday. This year Ash Wednesday is Wednesday. Easter will be observed March 31.
Popular Mardi gras traditions include wearing masks and costumes, dancing, and parades. In some areas, Mardi Gras has come to mean the period of activity related to the celebratory events, beyond just the single day. The festival season varies from city to city with cities famous for Mardi Gras celebrations, including Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.
