The Toledo Public Schools Board of Education voted tonight to search for an interim superintendent to replace outgoing top district official Jerome Pecko.

The unanimous vote places the focus on the hiring of a temporary superintendent internally, but external candidates will not be precluded, board officials said.

Applications for the interim position will be taken starting Friday. The application deadline is March 22.

Mr. Pecko leaves the post this summer.

He announced at a special board meeting earlier this year that he would not accept a new contract after his current, three-year term runs out July 31. He had said before the board meeting that he wanted to stay with the district, but only if he had board support.

School officials have denied comment on whether Mr. Pecko was offered a new contract.
