Eastwood Schools adds security at buildings
3/5/2013Eastwood Local Schools is adding security measures at its schools, including security film to cover windows and door-buzzer systems.
The board of education last week voted to spend $20,000 for security film to cover the schools’ exterior door windows and the ground-floor classroom windows at Pemberville and Luckey elementaries, Superintendent Brent Welker said.
The film protects the glass from shattering if someone tries to kick it in or shoot at it, he said. The film will be installed when weather allows.
The district will install buzzer and camera systems in each school, work Mr. Welker hopes is complete within a few weeks.
“Once we get it done, all the doors will be locked and each door will have a single point of entry with a camera and buzzer system,” he said.
The door system will cost less than $20,000 plus $160 a month for video monitoring. Funding for the security measures will come from permanent improvement funds. General fund dollars will cover the monthly video monitoring fee.
The district previously had discussed adding a buzzer system for its doors, but December’s deadly Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Connecticut “put this on the front burner,” he said.
