The Bedford Public Schools' Board of Education tonight selected a new superintendent.

The board voted 7-0 to hire Mark Kleinhans, who is currently the superintendent of Montrose Community Schools in Genesee County. His hiring is conditioned on successful negotiations of a compensation package.

Board officials said Mr. Kleinhans is expected to be paid an annual salary of roughly $120,000.

The Michigan Leadership Institute assisted the school district in the search to replace Ted Magrum, who retired in September. Jon White has been serving as acting superintendent.

Mr. Kleinhans has been superintendent of Montrose Schools, a 1,500-pupil district, since 2002. He had been principal of Kuehn-Haven Middle School and assistant principal at Alma Middle School in Alma, Mich.

The board had recently whittled its choices to two - Craig Haugen, superintendent of Jefferson Schools in Monroe County, was the other candidate.
