Sylvania plans student safety training session

In response to the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, Sylvania City Schools district has taken measures aimed to help ensure student safety.

“Newtown shook everyone nationally, and we started to think about how should we react to that,” Assistant Superintendent Scott Nelson said.

The district formed a School Safety and Security Committee in January, with Mr. Nelson as chairman. Meetings are held weekly and attended primarily by 12 members from the administration, faculty, and staff.

The first monthly meeting on Feb. 26 included the panel’s 25 members comprising parents, police and fire officials, and experts in human resources, information technology, communications, and maintenance. The panel is focusing on immediate and long-term goals in security and training staff about dealing with school threats. Under review is door security and placement of an extra layer of locks on doors. Buckets in schools have medical supplies. Safe rooms have been designated.

From 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 21, the Sylvania Parent School Council plans a school-safety training based on ALICE (Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Escape) at Central Trail Elementary, 4321 Mitchaw Rd.
