The school district in conjunction with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will again offer its Safety Town program in June and July. The program, for students entering kindergarten and first grades, aims to teach children how to stay safe at home and away.

The atmosphere is informal and designed not to be stressful for young children and to boost confidence in preschoolers entering school in the fall.

Topics include “Safety and electricity,” “Safety and the telephone,” “Safety and the policeman,” “Safety and animals,” “Safety and the bus,” and “Water safety.”

The program will feature classroom activities and a miniature “town” set up outside the Temperance Road Elementary School building with buildings, streets, sidewalks, and street signs. Students will cross the make-believe streets and “drive” cars through the miniature town to learn pedestrian safety, read traffic signs, and how to get safely to and from school. All students will get a T-shirt.

The fee is $55. Registration can be done at Bedford Community Education, 1623 W. Sterns Rd., or at bedford.k12.mi.us/community education.

The first session is full. Subsequent sessions will run from June 17 to 28 from 12 to 2 p.m. Two more will be held July 8 to 19: one from 9 to 11 a.m. and another from 12 to 2 p.m.
