DUNDEE, Mich. -- Dundee Community Schools became the first school district in Monroe County today to receive an American flag under new state legislation.
Representatives of area veterans organizations conducted the flag hanging ceremony at 10 a.m. at Dundee Middle School, 420 Ypsilanti St. Attendees included state Rep. Dale Zorn (R., Ida), Larry Cymbola of the Dundee Veterans Memorial, and Mark Kerr of Dundee, all of whom have spearheaded the project.
The project to provide a flag to each Monroe County public school classroom was funded by area veterans organizations, community groups, and individual residents. Dundee will receive 70 flags.
In August, 2012, the Michigan House passed legislation requiring every state public school to set aside time for the Pledge of Allegiance, with every classroom to display an American flag.
Contributions to the flag project are accepted at all Monroe Bank and Trust locations.
Dundee is about 25 miles north of Toledo.
