Operating levy request, sale top Sylvania district agenda

Sylvania school leaders are weighing the optimal time for a new operating levy request.

Superintendent Brad Rieger said the administration is considering November or May.

A levy amount has not been determined, he said. A 4.9-mill operating levy was passed in 2011.

Earlier, administrators told the school board to expect a levy recommendation July 22, which they said would allow time to analyze state aid after Gov. John Kasich signed the budget bill in June.

Despite an increase of more than $800,000 for the year starting July 1, taking total state funding to more than $13.6 million, Chief Financial Officer Laura Sauber forecast about a $3 million deficit for fiscal year 2015.

The July 22 meeting is at 5 p.m. at the administration office.

This week, the building that had housed Central Elementary will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday before an auction at 4 p.m. that day. The district is selling two parcels, at 3124 and 3364 King Rd., in Sylvania Township.

The school board is expected to meet in executive session after the bidding to discuss possible offers on the 13 acres, Mrs. Sauber said. She said district leaders set a minimum reserve, but she declined to comment on the amount.
