Northwood Local Schools approved tax request for November's ballot
Board of Education will ask voters to pass new taxes for construction of school facility
7/30/2013The Northwood Local Schools will be going to voters in November for approval of a combined property tax/earned income tax to fund construction of a new school facility that would house students in pre-kindergarten to 12th grades.
The Board of Education approved the tax request at a special meeting today. The vote was 4-0, with Jeff Dunlap absent, said Denise Niese, board president.
If approved, the new taxes would finance the major part of a new $32.1 million campus to be built at a yet-to-be determined location in the small district. The 130,000-square-foot facility would house 922 students.
The district's share of the cost would come to $20.8 million, with the remainder borne by the Ohio School Facilities Commission. Revenue from the taxes also would pay for the demolition of Northwood and Olney elementary schools and part of the high school. The southern portion of the high school building containing the gym/auditorium would be preserved.
District treasurer Angel Adamski said the 4.9-mill property tax component of the request would generate $11.7 million over 37 years; the continuing 0.25 percent income tax would yield $225,876 per year. She did not know what the property tax would cost a typical homeowner.
