The Monroe Public Schools Board of Education has authorized spending $511,090 for seven school buses.

Four of the buses will be new and three will be two years old, having been leased by other districts. Each bus will hold 71 passengers.

The district will sell 12 of its old buses to Kalamazoo Metal Recyclers for $950 to $1,850 each, with the radios and internal video systems removed beforehand.

Each of these buses has critical rust deterioration and has exceeded its expected service life.

Some have been driven more than 250,000 miles.
