Perrysburg school board continues debate on new school
6/16/2014Perrysburg School Board continues to debate the details of a proposed new school for the district‘s fifth- and sixth-graders, but is on track to ask voters for a 3.02-mill levy this fall to pay for the building.
The school board is in agreement about building the school, but will meet again Thursday and next month to to discuss whether all the revenue a 3.02-mill levy would generate is more than what is necessary for the project. The levy would generate $40 million over 28 years and would cost about $84 a year for the owner of a $200,000 home.
“I think us all five are on board with it, but we may not agree on all the details,” said Cal Smith, school board member.
A proposed 142,000-square-foot school building for fifth- and sixth-graders would cost about $35 million, architects told the Perrysburg Board of Education two weeks ago.
The remaining money generated by the new levy could be used to pay for other district projects.
The district also needs new electrical and air conditioning for the junior high for $2.6 million, a new auxiliary gym at the high school for $2.1 million, and more space for all-day kindergarten and security entrances at the elementary schools for about $3 million.
The board will discuss options and ask questions at a 7 a.m. meeting Thursday. Several board members emphasized the session was a public meeting and encouraged residents to attend.
