MCCC offers variety of summer camps

Monroe County Community College will hold 13 summer camps this year at its main campus on Raisinville Road. New this year are Black Powder Rifle Safety Camp and Dissection Camp.

MONROE — Firearms safety, theater, and girls volleyball are again among Monroe County Community College’s summer camp offerings this year.

The college will hold 13 camps at the Main Campus, 1555 S. Raisinville Rd. Registration is under way and ends one week before the beginning of each camp. For more information, call the office of lifelong learning at 734-384-4127. Registration forms are available at monroeccc.edu/​summercamps.htm.

Tina Pillarelli, the college’‍s director of lifelong learning, said the camps are educational and fun for children. “It’s great to get the kids on campus and expose them to college. We try to appeal to all different kinds of interests,” she explained.

She said two new offerings are the Black Powder Rifle Safety Camp offered from July 21-25 for boys and girls in grades 5 through 12, and the Dissection Camp, from July 14-17 for boys and girls in grades 4 through 6. Both will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Black Powder Rifle Safety Camp costs $99, and teaches the safety essentials of using a muzzle loader. Campers must have a certificate earned from an NRA basic rifle class. The Dissection Camp costs $79. Campers will learn about anatomy and organs.

The other camps are:

● AR15 Rifle Safety, July 14-18 — Teaches basic skills and attitude for the safe use of an AR15 for target practice. The camp is for children in grades 5 through 12 and meets from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $99.

● Aspiring Artist Camp, July 7-10 — Campers learn basic drawing and art skills. It is open to children in grades 3 to 10 and runs from 1 to 5 p.m. The cost is $79.

● Basic Pistol Safety, July 7-11 — Teaching safety and skills for using a pistol for grades 5 through 12 and meets from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $89. The NRA basic rifle class certificate is required.

● Basketball, July 21-24 — The focus is on developing fundamentals in children in grades 2 through 5 and meets from 9 a.m. to noon; grades 6 through 8 meet from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $69.

● Cooking, Aug. 4-7 — Basic skills are taught to children in grades 3 through 6 from noon to 2:30 p.m. Grades 7 through 10 will meet Aug. 4 to 7 from noon to 2:30 p.m. The cost is $94.

● Firearms Safety, June 23-27 — Campers in grades 5 through 12 will get basic instruction in guns and gun safety. The camp is from 9 a.m. to noon and costs $89.

● Guitar, July 21-25 — Campers in grades 8 to 12 will learn major and minor chords and how to tune a guitar. The camp meets from 9 a.m. to noon and costs $79. Campers must bring their own guitar.

● Photography, July 14-18 — Teaches campers in grades 8 to 12 the basics, from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $79.

● Theater, July 7-18 — Campers in grades 5 to 12 learn about the theatrical process, from from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $79.

● Volleyball for Girls, July 14-17 — Intense training for campers in grades 5 and 6, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and July 14-17 for grades 7 through 9 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $79.

●Welding, for grades 9 through 12, has four sections — July 23-26 from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.; July 7-11 from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $37.
