The renovated Savage Arena at the University of Toledo has been awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Charles A. Sullivan Athletic Complex and John F. Savage Arena received the second highest certification in the four-tier rating system, which recognizes projects that implement green building design and construction.

University officials and Charles Sullivan, retired chairman and CEO of Interstate Bakeries Corp., who donated $5 million to the project, unveiled a plaque this week to commemorate the LEED rating.

The project included the addition of the Sullivan Complex in 2008, new locker rooms, a training room, and a weight room. The use of energy efficient measures and a robust recycling program contributed to the rating.
