COLUMBUS -- NiSource Inc. will spend $500 million to update interstate natural-gas pipelines in Ohio, a project that will lead to more than 1,000 construction jobs in the state.

The Indiana company, which is the parent of Columbia Gas of Ohio, said the 459 miles of pipelines, which crisscross the state, will help improve safety and allow for transportation of gas from the Utica shale region.
